THE PHEASANT
Pheasants are brilliantly colored birds related to domestic fowl and peacock. English, Chinese ring-necked (Phasianus colchicus) and Mongolian pheasants have all been introduced into North America, but the ring-necked pheasant has been the most successful.
The male ring-necked pheasant weighs 2.5 to 4.5 pounds and has
red, gold, buff, brown, blue and black plumage, typically with a white ring about the
neck.
Females are
smaller and less brilliantly colored.
Pheasants eat insects, seeds and berries and nest on the ground. They are hunted in many areas and make fine table fare. They are often raised on shooting preserves and by hunting clubs.
